When the phonological structure of the borrowed language differs from that of Japanese, various phonological changes occur to adapt to the characteristics of Japanese. This study focuses on such phonological changes and investigates the phonological changes in the vowels of loanwords from Mongolian to Japanese to elucidate the characteristics of these vowel changes. The results revealed that these changes can be classified into three types: vowel matching, vowel epenthesis and vowel deletion. Vowel matching is related to the distinctive features of vowels. This study observes correspondences such as /a→a/、/ə→e/、/i→i/、/ɔ,ʊ→o/、/ɵ,u→ɯ/(Mongolian→Japanese). Vowel epenthesis then immediately occurs after the final consonant of a CVC syllable in which the inserted vowel is the same as that mentioned in previous studies. However, it may display different characteristics due to the influence of the Chinese pronunciation of the surveyed words and the characteristics of the discrepancy between the written and spoken language of the Mongolian.
